This article was updated on 24/June/2020.

So you’ve just graduated with a degree in BBA and like any other management student, you start to prepare for MBA.  Most of the students doing undergraduate courses wonder at some point, whether they should take admission in post-graduation or not. But is an MBA the only option left? Read on to know the options you can explore right after BBA.

Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) is the most popular course among students aspiring to venture into the world of management. This three-year course equips students with the necessary conceptual, entrepreneurial, and analytical skills required for handling business operations. After completing BBA, there is a profusion of sectors one can work in. You can work in consulting services, sales, and marketing, human resources, or even start a business.

On the contrary, there are many eminent courses which one can pursue after BBA, some of them are:- MMS (Masters in Management Studies), Master Marketing Management(MMM), Event Management, Company Secretary, etc.

A student who wants to expand his horizons and climb up the corporate ladder can go on to pursue a postgraduate degree and specialize in a particular branch. While an MBA is considered as the most optimal choice after BBA, there are other courses as well which are in no way inferior to it. One such course is PGDM.

What is PGDM?

PGDM stands for Postgraduate Diploma in Management. It is a two-year full-time course offered by the institutes that are recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and which are autonomous and not affiliated to any university. However, accreditation by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) makes an institute’s PGDM course equivalent to an MBA.

Difference between MBA and PGDM

  • The biggest difference between MBA and PGDM is that MBA is a degree program while PGDM is a diploma program.
  • Only institutes that are affiliated to a university can offer an MBA program while autonomous institutes offer the PGDM course to students.
  • The value of the degree or diploma will greatly vary, depending on your performance and the specialization that you have opted for. It is a myth that the MBA is more valuable than PGDM.
  • A lot of students believe that doing a PGDM course will not enable them to study further, especially in international universities that do not recognize diplomas. You will need to check for the credits that you may be eligible for, in case you want to go overseas for further education.
  • As far as the courses that are affiliated with the universities are concerned, the syllabus is provided by the universities. For non-affiliated courses like PGDM, the syllabus is created to suit industry requirements.
  • PGDM focuses on technical aspects, providing exposure to real-life business situations.
  • PGDM is more industry-oriented and students pursuing the course gain knowledge regarding building soft skills.
  • The course is flexible. Since it is offered by an autonomous institute, it does not have to follow university standards, so it is free to change its curriculum according to industry standards and changes in the business environment.
  • It provides you with immense industry exposure which prepares you for senior-level positions in a company.

In today’s competitive world, “knowledge is power” and getting the right knowledge via a good course can only mean positive things for you and your career. When it comes to career prospects, both MBA and PGDM courses are regarded as having equal value. Moreover, what truly matters is your professional capability and your commitment to the job. So evaluate your options carefully, and choose the best course which suits your preferences and personality.

You should gain information about the several courses that you can opt for after BBA that have demand in the present. You should always search on the internet and interact with your professors who can help you see several career options after BBA.
