This article was updated on June 1, 2020.

You know that feeling of adrenaline rush you get when school is over and its time to go to college? Thats one of the best feelings youll get in your life. You may not realize it right away, but later these moments will be cherished.

So when college life begins, there are loads of things to keep in mind as a student. College life is a little different from school life, but just a little. Some say college life is a little lenient than school life, but you know “rules are everywhere”. In school life, there are proper rules and regulations which are highlighted whereas, in college, there are silent rules, which are basically there and you have to obey them but it’s not written or said anywhere. So this article is all about those silent rules of college life that take a major place in a student’s day to day life.

Here are the 10 things a college student should remember:

Calling your seniors Sir/Maam

When you enter college life, whosoever is elder than you should be called Sir / Maam and not by their name, not just the teachers and professors but also the seniors.

College teaches us a lot from these little things. As when we step into the professional world we have to greet everyone with sir or maam and not by their name, and so college life improves our basic habit of not calling our seniors bhaiya or didi. This is the reason it is like a silent rule, it’s not written anywhere in the rule book that you have to call your seniors sir or maam, but you have to, as it improves your persona and benefits you.

Wear clothes that seem appropriate

In some colleges, there is a particular uniform, in some, there isnt. So if your college has set the students free when it comes to clothing, it doesn’t mean that you will ignore the dignity of the institution.

Your clothing doesnt give anyone the right to judge you. But it is advisable that you wear something that you are very comfortable in so that youre able to focus on learning. Uncomfortable clothing, often in the pressure of the ongoing trends, leads to diversion of attention.

A college is an institution where you get to learn something and not just in lectures but everywhere. So respect it. Your clothing sense should be decent, and most of all, comfortable. You should be confident enough in what you are wearing. There should be a dazzling smile on your face which could say that you are comfortable and confident enough in what you are wearing.

Networking is good

Networking in the industry is an important point. The institute looks after the marvelous ideas given by the students. So a student should always express his or her ideas, and feel free to share their viewpoints related to a particular aspect. This creates a good impression with the professors and enables them to remember you in instances of future recommendations.

Keep attendance in mind

These days the rules are changing. Many colleges have a rule of 75% minimum attendance or you don’t get to have your admit card for an exam. Don’t take it lightly. When someone hears 75% attendance in college life, he or she cracks in a laugh so bad, but in the end, they realize that it is the harsh reality and if you don’t take it seriously, you don’t get to sit in one or two exams.

I am not saying bunking is bad, well someone should have fun for a while but if so, then he or she should attend the classes too. That’s why 75% attendance is compulsory, and the rest is all up to you. And not only that, don’t assume college as your school life, where you can bring up a leave application of sickness as a savior as a reason why you weren’t attending the classes. Because, to be honest, everyone knows where you were, as Instagram stories spill the truth pretty easily.

Assignments are important

Most colleges have certain assignments requirements from the students. An assignment can carry your 20 marks or so. Well, it’s said to be the assignment work, the mid-semester tests and the behavior of the students with the teachers, etc., which counts as the assessment. Coming to the point, everybody thinks of college life as a cool life, though it is only a cool life when you are wanting it to be.

Assessment is an amazing way to score better, and the key point of assessment is assignments because all you have to do is not to mess up with the lecturers and the rest is fine. Plus, try to handle your mid-semester tests well. So when it comes to assignments, everybody knows that most of the class has copied it, either from the internet, or from your friend’s assignment, from the brightest student of the class, or the CR. But if you havent, then good for you. As assignments are a great way of revision.

But the basic agenda of assignment is to check your sincerity. Whether you copy it or not, the main purpose is to submit it, so always make sure to submit your assignments.

Be aware of your surroundings

Stay aware of what’s happening around in the college. I have seen many students, including seniors, who don’t know about the basic things of college that I knew on the very first day. You should know where you are going to study, or chill, or whatever in the coming 3 or 4 years.

Join a club/ society

Joining a club or a society is really cool. It would help you engage in a lot of activities, The kind of exposure you can get is amazing, and there would be a lot of learning mixed with fun. Plus, every college society goes for various trips, so do enjoy them, buckle up for them.

For some people, the best part of their college life is the time they spent in a club or a society. The bonds made there are worth cherishing. You not only learn and polish a skill being in a society, but also get to meet various other talented students.

Anti-ragging helpline number

A student should always have an anti-ragging helpline number saved on their mobile phones for their safety. Most colleges have anti-ragging cells these days, which is a good thing. If you ever face any trouble related to ragging, do not hesitate in contacting them.

Avoid using phones

Carrying a mobile phone is a privilege in college, but being a student, one should not use it much in college. Mobile phones are allowed in the colleges for a reason, avoid using them in between lectures, unless an emergency arises.

Pay attention to the notice board

Last but not least, the notice board. Unlike your school, where you will get to hear every little detail or something through announcements, again and again, college is different. Here you have to be aware of the notice board, you never know at which second a new notice gets stuck on it, and how important it could be for you.

So don’t be lousy and waiting for the speakers to speak up for the announcement, this is college, get up and go check the notice board. Plus, the trips and tours information always comes there, so who doesn’t wanna go there.

So college life is like a whole package, it’s fun, entertaining, adventurous, sometimes scary, sometimes nice, etc. But being a college student you should be always aware of these key points that will help you throughout your college life. I hope you learnt valuable things through this article and hope that you enjoy your college life.
