CAREER OPTIONS AFTER BCA | UPDATED 2019

BCA or Bachelor in Computer Applications is a course designed for those who are interested in the field of computer languages and want to eke out a career for themselves in that field.  BCA is getting increasingly popular among students as it provides them with an entryway into the industry of Information Technology. Often considered at par with a B.Tech or B.E degree in Computer Science or Information Technology, a degree in BCA helps the student get a sound academic base for an advanced career in Computer Applications.

Eligibility criteria

Although the eligibility criterion differs from college to college, there are some basic requirements that a student must fulfill to be eligible for a course in BCA. These requirements include:
  • The student should have passed 10+2 from any stream with a minimum aggregate of 45% to 55% marks, which must include English.
  • It is not necessary for the student to have studied Physics, Chemistry, Math in Plus Two, thereby enabling students from the Commerce and Arts Stream to apply for this course. However, some colleges do require students to have Mathematics as a subject in Plus Two.
  • Students can get admission to this course based on their merit or on their performance in the entrance tests conducted by some colleges and universities.
In BCA several subjects are taught which include operating systems, database management systems, software engineering, computer architecture, web technology and languages such as C, C++, HTML, Java etc. Students are also encouraged to do additional courses along with BCA, as that will increase their prospects of employment.

Career Options available after doing BCA

The demand for BCA graduates is increasing everyday with the rapid growth of the IT industry. BCA graduates can also find career options in a wide range of other industries. These are mentioned below.
  1. BCA graduates can find lucrative job opportunities in leading IT companies like Oracle, IBM, Infosys and Wipro. They can be employed in the prestigious positions of System engineer, software tester, junior programmer, web developer, system administrator, software developer and many such others.
  2. Recruitment for BCA graduates can also take place in the public sector. Government organizations like the Indian Air Force (IAF), Indian Army, and India Navy hire many computer professionals for their IT department.
  3. A BCA degree equips a student to work in the software industry immediately after graduation. This is because it helps the student develop programming skills, which can land him a high paying job in the positions of software developer, software test engineer, technical support engineer, technical writer, web designer, software sales engineer and many more.   7. BCA graduates can also make for themselves a career in application development, which is a highly trending industry. An in-depth knowledge of programming and programming languages like Java, XML, C, C++, HTML5 and MySQL (Sqlite) etc. can help them in this field. Almost all companies today require apps to be built for their websites. As such, the BCA graduate can either start their own app development company or join another app developer’s company.

Lastly, the BCA graduate can become an IT professional with the job of developing new software to ease the working environment; integrating software with existing systems; testing the feasibility of the new software; supporting, maintaining and documenting software functionality as well as ensuring that the software is user-friendly for others working on it. Apart from taking a managerial position or working in a company, a software professional can be a specialist in any of the core languages and can become a consultant in that field too.
 

Salary

The entry level salary for a BCA job can be between 18,000-25,000 INR per month after the candidate has completed a short training.  If the candidate is employed by an established organization like WIPRO, TCS or Infosys, then they can expect to start with a monthly salary of at least 15,000-18,000 INR. The salary goes up considerably as the candidate becomes more experienced. Additionally, if the candidate earns an MCA degree or goes for a specialization in a computer language program like JAVA, ORACLE or C++ while continuing with the job, then the salary receives a hike too. A monthly pay of  18,000 INR, gets nearly doubled after the completion of the MCA program or the specialization.   Therefore, we can see that job opportunities for BCA graduates abound. They can choose from a diverse plethora of jobs in different industries like Banks, BPO, Financial Institutions, Faculty in training institutes and schools, and even in Government Departments and Agencies.
