How to dress for an Interview ? | UPDATED 2019

Campus recruitment or not, the preparation of interviews start well ahead. Preparation of aptitude, group-discussions, technical rounds need a lot of preparation and practice. These keep the students on their toes for months together. However a midst all, people tend to forget a very important aspect, which can play an important role in your interview. The dress code. It is very important to dress right. Since your attire will give the interviewer the first impression about you. Here are few things to keep in mind when dressing for your Big day:

For male candidates-

  1. Dress more:One never knows what the company ethics are, whether business or business casuals. So it is always better to dress more. Being completely formal is the best way.
  2. Suit it up:A well fitted single or double breasted suit is the best to wear. Avoid wearing blazer with trouser. A matched attire is way more formal. Colors like black and navy are good. Avoid stripes and patterns on your suit. Wear a light coloured shirt beneath, preferably white or neutrals. Try wearing cotton and not linen. Linen tends to get crisped.
  3. Tie:Avoid flashy colored and patterned ties. The tie colour must be sober and material should neither be very light nor too heavy. The length of the tie is very important. Don’t keep it loose at the neck. The tie should end just above your belt buckle. Neither way above it nor should it hand below. It is a very important.
  4. Belt and shoes:It is an untold rule, that for formal wears, the belt and the shoe must be of the same color. Avoid wearing black belt with brown shoes and vice-verse. Shoe should be closed and well tied. Heavy broughed ones are not preferred. Avoid pin-pointed shoes. However make sure that your shoes are clean and well polished. Patches coming out of here and there, is a big no.
  5. Socks:Avoid white socks. As your trouser should preferably be of dark color, match socks accordingly. The length of socks is also important. It must be of such length that there is no skin show.
  6. Beard:Men are often the confused of keeping a stubble or going clean shaved. It is always advisable to go clean shaved for a job interview. Also avoid using after-shaves on the day of interview. The strong odour can be irritating for some.
  7. No wrist-lets:Men now-a-days, often wear wrist-lets, however it is better to take it off during interview.
  8. Hair:Tame your hair well. A well cut hair, giving a clean look is the right way. One may use hair gel to set it, but avoid the flashy ones. Your hair should not shine a lot.

For Female candidates-

  1. Western formal:If one wants to go for western formal, then skirts or trousers are the most advised. Pair then up with a crisp cotton shirt, preferably white or neutral colored. The length of the shirt is a topic of debate. It is best to keep it below the knee. Avoid wearing ankle length trouser, as it gives a casual look. A well fitted blazer is preferred with the attire.
  2. Indian formal:If one prefers Indian formal, then a salwar-kameez or Kurti-leggings is advised. But keep few things in mind. The dupatta of the kameez must not have any bells or flashy hanging. The attire must not have any lace or glass beads. Keep it plain and simple. The kurti should preferably be high-collared and of khaadi or cotton material. Neutral colors are preferable. Red is a big No. Avoid deep-cut clothes.
If one prefers to wear saree, then it should always be of cotton, hand-loom or khaadi material. Silk, Georgette, chiffon must be avoided. The blouse is advised to be of air-hostess cut.
  1. Hair and make up:Be minimalist in terms of make up, when going to an interview. No red lipstick or heavy blushes.
Ponytails and buns are the most popular hairstyles for formal dressing. The motto is to keep the hair away from the face and prevent it falling back. Never keep her hair open in an interview.
  1. Jewellery:Avoid too many jewellery. Do not wear flashy and dangling jewellery. Pearls preferred. Also maximum of one ring per hand is better.
  2. Shoe:Coming to shoe, one must wear low heeled or flat comfortable shoes. Better to fix the choice among black,brown and tan colors. Other colors are allowed, if kept simple. The shoe should be covered. Flip-flops and Eskimo shoes are big No. Wear clean and maintained shoe.
  3. Nails:Cut and file your nails well. Do not wear bright nail paints. If possible go for a french manicure.

Common things to keep in mind -

  1. Watches:Leather or metal strap watches are considered  formal. In case you are wearing something else, make sure it is simple and not flashy. Avoid colorful straps.
  2. Perfume:Always use a good mild perfume. Do not use a strong one. As the odour can irritate the interviewer.
III. Teeth: Brush your teeth well before heading for the interview. Avoid eating anything till done. Good smile makes a difference.
  1. No smoking:Do not smoke before an interview. The breadth will lay a bad impression.
