What is the best age to do an MBA?

Deciding on the right age and prior work experience for an MBA worries many B-school applicants, while age is one of many factors taken into account by admissions committees the general message seems to be: Dont procrastinate! There will generally be two broad groups who aim at an MBA. One being the fresher (i.e., fresh grads without any work experience) and the other being the working group of people Let us first examine what a fresh graduate’s approach towards MBA should be. They fall into 2 categories:

  • First, these are people who in general have developed interest in finance, accounting etc in different points in their graduation due to some of the elective courses which have generated special interest towards a particular stream. They also feel to develop a holistic view of the industry before getting into industry.
Though this category can still wait to develop further interest as reading an elective would be different from pursuing a full-time MBA. They could still get into the industry with their existing skill set and get to know more about the functioning of a company and then enter the path of MBA
  • The second categories are the ones who find it difficult to get a job due to various reasons with their present skill set. So they have no other option but to pursue an MBA with an extra interest towards the course.
These category needs to immediately roll on to the MBA course of their choice without any further delay would surely impede their chances to a fruitful career ahead The working professionals: Career progression: This is all about why any working professional wants to do an MBA in the first place. The working professionals generally fall into three groups.
  1. The first group consists of people, who like their sector, but there’s a glass ceiling and they think they will hit it in two or three years.
It is always better to be safe than sorry. People who are in such a situations could hang on their boots in the sector they are currently working in and pursue the MBA for a better future in the stream of their choice
  1. The second group believes that though the industry is now in a good shape but changes in coming years would make things difficult for an employee. Example could be loss of jobs due to automation or the current trend of Artificial intelligence which many perceive would take away the jobs of millions
The best option for people in this category is to a complete background check for their apprehension about the future of the field they are working in and if they find any cheesy reasons it is safe to switch without any further delay towards what could be an evergreen management degree.
  1. The third, and biggest, group is the “deep career switchers”. These are people who want to change function, sector, and geography of his /her work.
The right age range for this kind of career switch is 25 to 35 years: After the age of 35 it becomes more difficult (though not impossible) to make a deep career switch, generally due to family and personal situations
